Breadfruit is considered by many the food of the future, Breadfruit also called Ulu or Panapen and it's been a staple food in the Pacific islands for over 2000 years. Ulu is an important part of the local food tradition and folklore in Hawaii. It can be prepared like a fruit or a vegetable since it's incredibly versatile. When roasted, it feels and tastes like baked bread, hence the name. Fun facts about Breadfruit Sir Joseph Banks, a sailor who embarked with Captain Cook to Tahiti in the 18th Century famously said that if you planted 10 breadfruit trees in your life, you or your future generations would never go hungry, we paraphrase of course. It is said that the famous mutiny of the H.M.S Bounty happened because of Breadfruit! The mission of the Bounty was to transplant more than 1000 young breadfruit trees, but they arrived late. Forced to depart, the unhappiness of the crew eventually turned into mutiny. So there you have it, breadfruit has a long history! Cacao Fruit also called Cacao pods is not what you'd expect. It's much better! Did you know that the literal translation for Cacao’s scientific name means “Food of the Gods”? The Olmecs, an ancient civilization from what is now Mexico, were the first to use Cacao Fruit over 3,500 years ago. They obviously didn’t know what they had because if they did, we’d all be speaking Olmec right now… Instead, the just the airport in Brussels, Belgium sells over 800 tons of chocolate every year but, we digress. Cacao Fruit and Chocolate Cacao Pods are these American football shape-inspired fruits and coincidentally are where Chocolate comes from. Yes, the name is a little confusing and we get a lot of people asking for cocoa fruit, cocoa, cacao... does it even matter, at the end it all comes form the cacao bean that lives inside the fruit. The white flesh has a pretty delicious zingy sweet flavor, it’s hard to describe its tart, fruity, citrusy flavor with mango and pineapple notes. If you haven’t tried Tropical Avocados, you are in for a treat. To my family, the Tropical Avocado has always been known as an Aguacate, pronounced (ah-gwa-kah-tee). This variety is a staple food in the Caribbean and Latin America where it’s been the most popular variety for generations. Tropical Avocados are also known as green skin avocados because of their shiny and gorgeous shade of green. They are a source of good fats, are hearty, yummy, and are full of nutrients. How do Tropical Avocados taste like? When it comes to taste, they are pretty similar to the Haas avocado although slightly sweeter. They are creamy, luscious, and delicious. They spread very easily and have a buttery and creamy smooth texture. They have a light yellow and green color inside, and the seed can be brittle but that’s OK. The reality is that they are very similar to the avocados you are used to. How are Tropical Avocados better? Larger in size: The first thing you’ll notice is that they are humongous compared to the varieties you can buy at the supermarket. Each Tropical Avocado is about the equivalent of 4 Haas avocados. You can prep just one and feed your whole family. Longer cut life: One of my pet peeves with those other avocados is that they turn black and the flavor changes right away, in the industry they call that oxidizing. The Tropical Avocados oxidize much slower which means that you can cut them and leave them out for longer. You can even keep one in the fridge wrapped in foil for two to three days after you cut them. How do you know when they are ripe? These avocados are ripe while the skin is still green, which is a little confusing if you are not used to them. Luckily, there is a simple way to know when they are ready. How? When you squeeze them and they give in just a little, they are ready to eat. Where are they from? These avocados are grown in the tropics on a beautiful farm in the Dominican Republic and in the off season over there, they come from beautiful and sunny Florida, where we are based. They grow with plenty of natural rain in nutrient-rich soil. They are naturally large, non-GMO and delicious. Our Large Box comes with about 8 Large Tropical Avocados. This tropical fruit is native to South America, and it's related to the tomato. But don't let that fool you - the tamarillo is its own unique fruit, with a tart and tangy flavor that's perfect for adding a little zing to your breakfast or lunch.Grown in altitudes of over 5000 ft in Ecuador,the Tree Tomato has a flavor that people compare to a mixture of guava, passion fruit with the tomato notes that give it its name. The tamarillo is a small tree or shrub, and it bears oval-shaped fruits that come in red or yellow. The skin of the fruit is thin and delicate, so handle with care. Inside the skin is where you'll find the juicy flesh of the tamarillo, which is full of seeds. Make sure to remove the skin that's bitter and we recommend peeling it before eating it. Red bananas are in! Aren’t you tired of traditional bananas? Well… do we have a contender for you. The beautiful and not boring Red Banana. No, this banana is not angry or blushing, it’s just doing its thing, waiting to be devoured by you! What makes them different? They have a red purplish colored exterior, their flesh color is a little bit darker with an orangish color and they are slightly plumper. When they start getting softer and their color lightens, they are good to go. You can definitely eat them by themselves, use them in desserts, and they also make awesome smoothie companions since you can mix them with pretty much anything healthy and they will make it taste better. Tamarind fruit is loved all over the world. Growing up, we just knew them as tamarindo fruit, and we thought it only had one flavor. We were so wrong! There are two main varieties of Tamarind, the sour one that makes you feel like you sucked on 100 lemons (the one we knew as kids)  and the sweet tamarind fruit that brings the best of the fruit world in a nicely packaged pod that will take your fruit game to a whole new level. Let’s face it, Eggfruit, also known as Canistel or Yellow Sapote is absolutely delightful. When you cut it open, you discover the absolutely beautiful yellow color which takes you by surprise. We have Sapodilla! After a crazy season, we were able to get our hands on a small batch of the ever-popular Sapodilla, also called Nispero, Chico Fruit, Zapote, Zapotillo, and Tree Potato, which curiously, tastes nothing like a potato. As a matter of fact, comparing this fruit to a potato is our new apples and oranges. So, from now on, to show that you are an Exotic fruit connoisseur, you'll say while slightly elevating your nose, it's like Sapodillas and Potatoes. People might look at you funny but Tropifruiters and the Fruitarians are going to revere you, but I digress... What does it taste like? This is definitely a dessert fruit, it's very sweet and has oaky, light molasses notes, and the flavor of brown sugar and roasted sweet potato. You can just chill it and eat it with a spoon, it's that good! The Sapodilla is a close cousin of the Mamey Sapote, Canistel, and Caimito, also known as Star Apple. Some of our very favorites.
