Breadfruit is considered by many the food of the future, Breadfruit also called Ulu or Panapen and it's been a staple food in the Pacific islands for over 2000 years. Ulu is an important part of the local food tradition and folklore in Hawaii. It can be prepared like a fruit or a vegetable since it's incredibly versatile. Sir Joseph Banks, a sailor who embarked with Captain Cook to Tahiti in the 18th Century famously said that if you planted 10 breadfruit trees in your life, you or your future generations would never go hungry, we paraphrase of course.
It is said that the famous mutiny of the H.M.S Bounty happened because of Breadfruit! The mission of the Bounty was to transplant more than 1000 young breadfruit trees, but they arrived late. Fate would have it that in the months they spent waiting, the crew grew enchanted with the island and didn’t want to leave.
Forced to depart, the unhappiness of the crew eventually turned into mutiny. So there you have it, breadfruit has a long history!
