Tamarind fruit is loved all over the world. Growing up, we just knew them as tamarindo fruit, and we thought it only had one flavor. We were so wrong!
There are two main varieties of Tamarind, the sour one that makes you feel like you sucked on 100 lemons (the one we knew as kids) and the sweet tamarind fruit that brings the best of the fruit world in a nicely packaged pod that will take your fruit game to a whole new level. Once you start eating the sweet tamarind, you can’t eat just one; it’s that good!
Coming from Thailand, this sweet variety is known as “makham wan” and our Tropifruiters love it for its uniquely complex flavor that leaves you wondering… did nature just overdo itself? That’s a resounding hell yeah!
What does Sweet Tamarind fruit taste like?
First, you’ll notice its sweetness, it has those brown sugar, and molasses notes perfectly balanced by its tanginess. This complex citrusy undertone, combined with the sweetness, earthy notes, and pulpy, soft, and chewy texture, is nothing less than nature’s candy.
The experience of eating sweet tamarind is pretty unique if you’ve never had it. First, you crack the hard shell, then you take out the seed pod covered in the yummy pulp, but before you go crazy, you need to remove the veiny-looking branches that come out easily so you don’t feel you are eating a fishing net. Once that’s done, get ready to smudge your fingers and suck the pulp out of the seeds in a ritual that you’ll perform over and over again until the whole box is gone. We don’t recommend eating all of them in one sitting, but we’ve been known to do just that.
How do you eat Tamarind Fruit?
You can just eat it straight out, crack the shell, enjoy, and repeat. It’s as yummy as it’s satisfying. Kids love it, and it will keep them busy for a while; just remember to take out the seeds.
Use the pulp to make traditional Thai dishes like Tamarind chicken, Pad Thai or add it to your own stir fry or sauces to give them that fancy finish.
